World Press Freedom Day: Importance..!!

Every year on May 3, World press Freedom Day is observed to promote awareness of the value of press freedom and the contribution of journalists to the advancement of democracy and the defence of human rights. This day was established by the UN General assembly in 1993 to commemorate the signing of the Windhoek Declaration, a declaration of values for a free press in Africa, by media professionals from all over the continent in 1991.The occasion to recognise the value of a free press in promoting accountability, openness, and good governance is presented by World press Freedom Day. It also draws attention to the difficulties that journalists confront around the world as they attempt to expose injustices while working in perilous situations. These difficulties include censorship, harassment, assaults on the body, detention, and even murder. This day serves as a reminder to governments to uphold press freedom and safeguard journalists' independence and safety.

Press freedom in a democracy is crucialA democratic society cannot function without press freedom because it gives people access to the accurate and diversified information they need to make informed decisions and hold those in positions of authority responsible. The media serves as a watchdog in a democratic society, exposing instances of power abuse, corruption, and other wrongdoings that may go unnoticed or handled by other organisations. In order to ensure that public servants are held responsible for their acts and that the general public has access to information regarding government policies, decisions, and activities, a free and independent media is also essential.
