Sankranti rush leads to huge traffic jams on highway
People left for their villages using trains, buses, or any other method of transportation that was available because both telugu states had declared holidays beginning a day before sankranti celebrations. Many households departed in their personal four-wheelers. The yadadri Bhuvanagiri district's Patangi toll plaza was crowded with hundreds of vehicles. Nearly a kilometre of vehicles were parked in a line. Despite the availability of Fast Tag, the large number of vehicles and the difficulty scanning Fast Tag for some of them caused a major traffic bottleneck. GMR Toll Plaza opened ten additional lanes for the vehicles due to the heavy traffic. Staff from the GMR Toll Gate and Rachakonda police were attempting to control the situation.
People were crammed into trains and buses heading to various locations in both telugu states because they wanted to be with their loved ones to celebrate the harvest festival on january 14. The telangana State Road Transport Corporation's (TSRTC) hundreds of buses and the railways' dozens of special trains were proving unable to handle the crowds.
