Earlier, after the hearing in March, the court had reserved the order on the punishment against Mallya.
The top court had convicted Mallya of contempt of court for transferring $40 million to his children in violation of the court's order. In the hearing, the supreme court, while giving Vijay Mallya the last chance to reply, had said that it would be decided to proceed with the issue of punishment only in Mallya's absence.
The court had also said that if Mallya does not present his case, then the court will pursue the matter on legal grounds. Mallya was convicted in 2017 of defying court orders for not giving accurate details of assets. The supreme court has also rejected the review petition filed by Mallya on this decision of the court. On february 10, the supreme court had given Vijay Mallya a final opportunity of two weeks to appear in person or through a lawyer in the contempt case against him.
The supreme court will pronounce its verdict on July 11 on the plea of gangster Abu salem, who is serving a life sentence in the mumbai serial blasts case. In this petition, Abu salem has said that according to the extradition treaty between india and Portugal, his prison sentence cannot exceed 25 years. It is worth noting that earlier the supreme court had sought a response from the central government in this matter.
