Does gender inequality matter to the current government?

In response to a question asked in the lok sabha on the Global Gender Gap Index 2024 report, minister of State in the Ministry of women and Child Development savitri Thakur said that the government of india is aware of this. The government is making many efforts to bring equality between men and women. The government wants to ensure that women get equal opportunities to get jobs and earn money. For this, the government has made many laws which have special provisions for women.

Maternity Benefit Act: Changes were made in this law in 2017, due to which now women get 26 weeks leave instead of 12 weeks for up to two children when they become mothers. This law also states that if possible, women can 'work from home' after the leave. For this, the employer and the employee will have to discuss and decide how this will happen.

Participation of women in politics

According to the report, the participation of women in politics in india is still very low. Only 25.1% gap has been eliminated. Political participation of women in india is low, but India's ranking (65th place) is better than other countries of the world. This is because the participation of women in politics is very low in most countries of the world.

India was ranked 51st in 2021, but now it has come to 65th place. This shows that the situation in india has worsened in the last two years. This is worse than 2014 when India's score was 43.3%. Progress towards increasing women's participation in politics around the world is very slow. In most countries, women still do not get equal representation in politics.

A heavy price has to be paid for keeping women behind

Many researches show that if we do not give women a chance, we will suffer huge economic losses. According to OECD estimates, if discrimination against women continues in society, the whole world may suffer a loss of $12 trillion. But if women are given equal opportunity, the pace of economic progress of the country will increase.
