If You Don’t Recharge, How Long Does It Take for Your SIM to Be Deactivated?

Kokila Chokkanathan
Mobile SIM cards in india do not get deactivated immediately after a recharge expires. Telecom operators follow a step-by-step process that includes validity expiry, a grace period, and eventual disconnection if the number remains unused for a long time.

1. What Happens When Recharge Expires?

When your prepaid plan expires:

  • Outgoing calls, SMS, and data services stop immediately
  • Incoming services may continue for a limited time (varies by operator)
  • Your SIM does not get deactivated right away
At this stage, your number is still recoverable through recharge.

2. Grace Period After Expiry

Most telecom companies such as Jio, Airtel, Vi, and bsnl provide a grace period of about 15 to 90 days depending on their policy and the plan.

During this period:

  • You may still receive incoming calls or SMS (in some cases)
  • You can reactivate the SIM by recharging
  • Services remain partially active or dormant
This grace period is designed to prevent immediate loss of numbers.

3. Deactivation Stage

If you do not recharge within the grace period:

  • The SIM becomes fully inactive
  • Outgoing and incoming services stop completely
  • The number is marked for disconnection
At this stage, recovery becomes difficult but may still be possible in rare cases if reactivation is requested quickly.

4. Final Stage: Number Recycling

If the SIM remains unused for a longer period:

  • The number is permanently disconnected
  • After about 90 to 180 days (varies by operator), the number may be reassigned to another user
This means the old number is lost permanently.

5. Operator-Wise General Timeline (Approximate)

6. Important Points to Remember

  • Each telecom operator has slightly different rules
  • Postpaid SIMs follow different billing and disconnection rules
  • SIMs linked to bank OTPs, UPI, or Aadhaar should not be left inactive
  • Recharging early is the safest way to avoid losing your number
Conclusion

If you don’t recharge your SIM, it does not get deactivated immediately. Generally, you have a grace period of 15 to 90 days, after which the SIM may be deactivated, and within 3 to 6 months, the number can be permanently recycled if unused.
