🆔 Aadhaar Card: How to Change Your Photo (Easy Step by Step Guide)

Kokila Chokkanathan
Updating your photo on your Aadhaar card isn’t something you can do online by clicking a button — you need to visit an Aadhaar centre in person. The Unique Identification Authority of india (UIDAI) requires physical presence for changing biometric data like your photo.

📍 Why You Must Visit an Aadhaar Centre

Unlike demographic updates (like name, address, date of birth), which you can update online, photo updates must be done in person at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra because your live photograph has to be clicked on the spot.

📄 Step‑By‑Step: How to Change Your Photo

 1. Download the Aadhaar Update Form

  • Go to the official uidai website (uidai.gov.in).
  • Download the Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Form.
  • You can also ask for the form directly at the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
🏢 2. Visit the Nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre

Take the filled form along with your Aadhaar details to the closest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

📸 3. Submit Form & Give biometric Details

  • Submit your form to the staff.
  • Provide your biometric details (fingerprints, iris scan if requested).
  • The executive will take your live photograph on site.
You do not need to carry a printed photo for this update.
💰 4. Pay the Update Fee

There’s a nominal fee charged for photo change (usually around 100, including GST).

📌 5. Get Your Acknowledgment (URN)

After submission, you’ll receive an Update Request Number (URN) on the acknowledgment slip.
👉 You can use this URN to check the update status online later.

⏱️ Wait for the Update to Complete

  • The photo update typically takes up to 90 days to reflect in the Aadhaar database.
  • Once updated, your new photo will be visible when you download your Aadhaar again from the uidai portal.
🪪 After the Update: Download Updated Aadhaar

Once the photo is updated:

Visit the UIDAI websiteDownload Aadhaar.

Enter your Aadhaar number / Enrolment ID / Virtual ID.

Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

Download the e‑Aadhaar PDF with your updated photo.

📌 Key Things to Know

Photo cannot be changed fully online — only by visiting an Aadhaar centre.
No extra documents are needed for changing just the photo.
✔ You can track the update status online using the URN.
✔ This process applies whether your photo is too old or needs replacing.
