UP RTE Admission 2026: Free School Seats for Poor Children in Private Schools

Balasahana Suresh
Lucknow / Uttar Pradesh: The Uttar Pradesh government has opened the admission process for the 2026–27 academic session under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory education (RTE) Act, 2009, giving poor and economically weaker children the chance to study free of cost in private schools.

Under the RTE Act, 25% of seats in the entry‑level class (such as pre‑primary, Nursery, LKG, UKG, and Class I) in unaided private schools are reserved for children from disadvantaged and weaker sections of society. These reserved seats are free of tuition fees, enabling families who cannot afford private education to access quality schooling.

🏫 What the Scheme Offers

  • The RTE quota guarantees that one‑quarter of seats in private schools are free for underprivileged children, with fees covered by the government under the RTE Act.
  • The reservation applies to around 68,000 private schools across the state, with approximately 6 lakh seats available for admission in 2026–27.
  • This policy aims to reduce the education gap between richer and poorer families and give children from economically weak households a chance at quality education they might otherwise not afford.

🧑‍🎓 Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for free admission under the RTE quota, children must meet the following age criteria (as on april 1, 2026):

  • Nursery: 3–4 years
  • LKG: 4–5 years
  • UKG: 5–6 years
  • Class I: 6–7 years
Parents will also need to provide key documents during application — such as proof of residence, income certificate (for economic eligibility), Aadhaar information (parent’s Aadhaar now sufficient), and age proof — as part of the online process. The government removed the mandatory requirement for the child’s Aadhaar card to make the process easier for disadvantaged families.

🎯 Why This Matters

The RTE admission programme is designed to ensure that every eligible child receives free and compulsory elementary education, as the law intends. It removes financial barriers that typically keep underprivileged children out of private education, while also pushing private schools to contribute to inclusive schooling.

In previous years, Uttar Pradesh has successfully enrolled large numbers of underprivileged children through the RTE quota, helping change the lives of many families who otherwise could not afford quality schooling.
