Gas Cylinder: Do LPG cylinders also have an expiry date? Understand the facts

Balasahana Suresh
Many people wonder if LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders, which we use for cooking, have an expiry date. Unlike food items or medicines, LPG itself doesn’t expire. However, the cylinder—the metal container holding the gas—does have a validity period and requires regular checks for safety.

Why LPG cylinders have a validity period

LPG is stored in pressurized steel cylinders. Over time, exposure to pressure, weather, rust, and corrosion can weaken the metal. To prevent accidents such as leaks or explosions, regulatory authorities mandate that cylinders be used only up to a certain period.

How to check if your cylinder is safe

Manufacturing date: Check the stamp on the cylinder—it usually shows the manufacturing month and year.

Inspection validity: Cylinders must be inspected periodically. In India, most LPG cylinders have a 10–15 year validity from the manufacturing date, depending on the manufacturer.

Blue/Red bands: Some cylinders have color-coded bands indicating inspection or refill status.

Safety tips for LPG cylinders

  • Never use a cylinder past its inspection date.
  • Store cylinders upright and away from heat sources.
  • Check for rust, dents, or leaks before use.
  • Get the cylinder inspected at authorized dealers if it looks damaged or is old.
Important note

While the gas itself doesn’t expire, using an expired or damaged cylinder is dangerous. Regular checks ensure both your safety and uninterrupted cooking.

Bottom line:
LPG cylinders don’t have a “gas expiry,” but the container has a validity period for safety reasons. Always check the manufacturing date and inspection marks before refilling or using a cylinder.
