How to Cook Basmati Rice.Explain

Balasahana Suresh

1. Rinse the Rice

Take the desired amount of basmati rice and rinse it under cold water 2–3 times until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky. Optional: soak the rice for 20–30 minutes to make the grains longer and fluffier.

2. Measure Water

Use 1.5 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice. Adjust slightly if you want firmer or softer rice. Too much water can make it mushy, too little can leave it undercooked.

3. Boil the Water

Bring the water to a rolling boil in a pot. Add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of oil or ghee for extra flavor and to keep the grains separate.

4. Cook the Rice

Add the rinsed rice to the boiling water. Stir gently, then reduce the heat to low. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and simmer for 15–20 minutes. Avoid opening the lid during cooking to retain steam.

5. Let It Rest

Turn off the heat and let the rice rest for 5–10 minutes with the lid on. This allows the rice to firm up slightly and remain fluffy.

6. Fluff and Serve

Use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains. Your basmati rice is now ready to enjoy with curries, dals, or stir-fries.
