Free Flowers from BigBasket on onam Upset Bengaluru Resident; Here’s Why
A gesture by Bengaluru-based grocery delivery company BigBasket intended to celebrate onam has sparked anger from a local resident. The company included free orange and yellow marigold flowers with her grocery order, which led the woman, known by her X handle @malnadkoos, to voice her frustration on social media. She criticized the gesture as being “worse than conversion” and questioned whether BigBasket would offer similar items for other festivals.
“So according to BigBasket, we should celebrate Onam! Whether we like it or not is apparently not our choice, but theirs!” she wrote on X.
She described the gesture as “forceful” and asked if similar offers would be extended to other festivals, such as Varamahalakshmi, Dasara, and Deepavali. She expressed her displeasure, stating, “Why give flowers for free on Onam? This is worse than conversion!”
The user shared a photo of the two packets of flowers she received along with her order and a screenshot showing the flowers, valued at Rs 28.25, as a freebie.
In her social media post, she claimed to be “fighting demographic changes” by criticizing the company, and her X bio translates from kannada as, “Our land is our rule, kannada, Kannada-Karnataka-Kannadigas.”
The post sparked a range of reactions from social media users. Some suggested she could have shared the flowers with neighbors or used them for home decoration. Comments included:
“Why not give the flowers to someone celebrating onam or use them to decorate your home? All this fuss over a free item,” one user wrote.
“It’s odd to be upset about a free gift. Many of us exchange gifts for various festivals and occasions, so why not appreciate this one?” another commented.
“I don’t celebrate onam, but I still appreciate the gesture. Flowers are beautiful and useful. @bigbasket_com, please continue this practice for every festival,” said a third user.
“Use them for your regular puja or give them to a neighbor,” suggested another.
“We don’t see discounts or promotions for Ugadi from these national online stores in Karnataka. I wouldn’t complain about receiving free items,” noted a fifth user.
“I wouldn’t mind getting free stuff. Flowers are just flowers; you can use them for poojas or decoration,” added another commenter.
