Doctors said that the patient, David Bennett, will be monitored for the next few weeks to determine if the transplant surgery offers life-saving benefits. Bartley B. Griffith, who surgically replaced the pig's heart, said it was a breakthrough surgery and took us to the next level in resolving the organ shortage crisis.
It is noteworthy that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted emergency approval to surgery on New Year's Day through its Extended Access arrangement.
