U.S. Journalist imprisonment for 11 years in Myanmar
On november 12th, 2021, Military ruled-Myanmar had sent the U.S Journalist Danny Fenster to 11 years jail charging terrorism act breach and Sedition. He was jailed despite U.S. calls to release him. Fenster who is 37 years old is the managing editor of Magazine Frontier Myanmar. He was said to be violating the immigration Act and found guilty of unlawful associations laws. The magazine has stated that the law is the harshest one they have known. He is the first foreign and western Journalist to be sentenced recently.
Thomas Kean, the chief editor of Frontier has said that the charges were baseless. All the people and staffs in Frontier are very dejected and disappointed at this situation. They want to see Danny released soon and go back to his family.
He was arrested in May when he tried to leave the country and kept in the prison where many opponents of Tatmadaw are kept and tortured. He was also charged for violation of terrorism which came without explanation. Fenster's family has called for his release many times and is in frustration about his detention this week. The U.S Embassy has not also answered the verdict that happened on Friday. Sonny Swe, Publisher of Frontier, who spent 8 years of imprisonment in the last dictator rule, has stated that a lot of wrong things are happening in the country.
