WhatsApp Tests ‘After Reading’ Feature for Disappearing Messages

Balasahana Suresh
The messaging platform whatsapp is reportedly testing a new privacy-focused feature called “After Reading”, designed to make disappearing messages more dynamic and user-controlled. The feature has been spotted in beta versions and is still under development.

What Is the “After Reading” Feature?

The new option allows messages to automatically disappear after they are read by the recipient, rather than disappearing after a fixed time from when they are sent.

Key idea:

  • Message stays visible until it is opened
  • A timer starts after the message is read
  • Message disappears after a short delay (around 15 minutes in some tests)
This is a major shift from WhatsApp’s existing disappearing messages system.

How It Works

According to beta reports:

  • Once the recipient opens the message, a countdown begins
  • After the set duration (e.g., 15 minutes), the message is deleted
  • If the message is never opened, it may still expire after a longer fallback period (like 24 hours)
This ensures messages don’t remain indefinitely, even if unread.

Difference From Existing Disappearing Messages

Currently, whatsapp offers disappearing messages with fixed timers such as:

  • 24 hours
  • 7 days
  • 90 days
But the key difference is:

Why whatsapp Is Adding This Feature

The goal is to improve privacy and control in chats. The feature is especially useful for:

  • OTPs and verification codes
  • Passwords or sensitive info
  • Temporary personal or work updates
It also builds on existing tools like “View Once” media but extends the idea to text messages.

Privacy and Limitations

While the feature improves privacy, it is not foolproof. Users can still:

  • Take screenshots
  • Record the screen
  • Copy content before it disappears
So it adds protection, but not complete security.

Rollout Status

  • Currently in beta testing phase
  • Not yet available to the public
  • Expected to roll out gradually after testing is complete
Conclusion

The “After Reading” feature shows WhatsApp’s push toward more controlled and ephemeral messaging. Instead of messages disappearing based on time alone, they will now behave more like real-time, short-lived conversations—vanishing shortly after being seen.
