Pixxel Joins Hands with Sarvam AI for India’s First AI-Powered Orbital Data Centre

India’s space-tech startup Pixxel and AI firm Sarvam AI have announced a landmark partnership to build India’s first AI-powered orbital data centre satellite.

The project is named “Pathfinder”, and it marks one of the first serious attempts by indian companies to combine space infrastructure with artificial intelligence computing in orbit.

What is the “Pathfinder” Mission?

The Pathfinder is a 200 kg class satellite designed to act as a data centre in space.

Key features:

Hosts data-centre-class GPUs (high-performance computing chips)

Performs AI training and inference directly in orbit

Processes satellite and AI data without relying fully on Earth-based servers

It is expected to launch around late 2026 (Q4 2026).

Who is Doing What?

The roles are clearly divided between the two companies:

Pixxel’s role

Designs and builds the satellite

Launches and operates it

Integrates space hardware and imaging systems

Sarvam AI’s role

Provides AI models and “brain” of the system

Runs large language models (LLMs) in orbit

Handles training and inference in space

Why This Is a Big Deal

This project is important because it introduces a new idea:
👉 moving AI computation from Earth to space

Main advantages being explored:

Reduces dependency on Earth-based data centres

Avoids power and cooling limitations on Earth

Enables real-time processing of satellite data in orbit

Could support faster Earth observation insights

Why “Orbital Data Centres”?

Companies globally are exploring space-based computing because:

Earth data centres require huge electricity and land

AI models are becoming extremely power-hungry

Space offers continuous solar energy and cooling advantages

This trend is still experimental but growing quickly, with companies like SpaceX also exploring similar concepts.

What Makes This India’s First?

This initiative is being described as India’s first because:

It combines AI + high-performance computing + satellite infrastructure

It aims to run full AI models directly in space

It is a fully Indian-led private sector collaboration

Simple Summary

Pixxel and Sarvam AI are building a satellite called Pathfinder that will act like a mini AI data centre in space, capable of running AI models directly in orbit instead of on Earth.
