WhatsApp Working on Profile Cover Photos for iOS: Here’s How It Will Work

Balasahana Suresh
WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new profile customization feature that will allow users to add cover photos to their personal profiles on iOS devices. This update is currently being spotted in the beta version (iOS 26.1.10.71) through Apple’s TestFlight program and is expected to roll out more widely soon.

What Is a Profile Cover Photo?

The profile cover photo is a larger, banner‑style image that appears above your regular profile picture — similar to how cover photos work on platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn. It gives users an extra layer of personalization beyond the usual circular profile image.

How It Will Work

Here’s what we know so far about how the feature is expected to function:

📸 Add or Change Cover Image
Users will be able to tap on the cover photo area in their whatsapp profile and choose an image from their gallery or take a new photo, just like selecting a regular profile picture.

📍 Placement and Display
The cover photo will appear above the profile picture in your profile interdata-face. When contacts view your profile, they’ll see both the cover image and your profile picture together.

🖼️ Reposition or Replace
Once set, you should be able to reposition or replace the cover photo anytime from profile settings. The method is expected to mimic the existing workflow used by whatsapp Business cover photos.

Who Gets It First?

This feature is currently in beta testing for iOS users and may later be enabled for Android users as well. whatsapp typically tests such features first with select users before a full public release.

Why It Matters

  • Enhanced Personalization: Cover photos add an extra way to express yourself or set the mood of your profile.
  • More Profile Insights: Visually richer profiles can give contacts more context at a glance.
  • Closer to Social Platforms: This brings whatsapp personal profiles closer to what users see on other social networks.
Summary:
WhatsApp is adding support for profile cover photos on iOS, a feature that will allow you to display a larger banner image above your profile picture. It’s currently in beta testing and expected to roll out publicly in future updates, first appearing on iPhones before potentially coming to Android.
