Following the
oscar nominations on Tuesday, Steven Spielberg's West Side Story will be accessible on Disney+ in March. With a
remake of West Side Story, one of the most beloved stage plays of all time, the prolific
director decided to try a
genre he had never tackled before: musicals. The musical, which was previously adapted into a film in 1961, adapts the well-known Romeo and Juliet storey to 1950s New York.
As a couple of star-crossed couples (Ansel Elgort and
rachel Zegler) find middle ground, feuding families become feuding gangs. When Steven Spielberg's West Side Story premiered in early December, it received near-universal acclaim, winning over even those who were sceptical of another film adaptation of the musical. West Side Story is up for seven Nominated films this year, namely best film, best filmmaker for Spielberg, and best supporting performer for Ariana DeBose. Unfortunately, the critical praise was not matched by commercial success, with the film grossing only $63 million units worldwide.
Today's announcement, on the other hand, could help the picture gain a lot of new fans. On Wednesday,
march 2, Disney announced that West Side Story will be available for streaming on Disney+ in the
united states and most other nations. It will then be released on
march 9 in
taiwan and
march 30 in Japan. ABC's one-hour spectacular Something is really Coming: West Side Story - A Special Edition of 20/20 is already accessible on the service.
