Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, co-director of Scream, revealed the origin of Melissa Barrera's enigmatic mother in a new conversation. Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Jack Quaid, co-starred beside Barrera. Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox reprised their characters from the original plot in Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's movie.
After her sibling Tara (Ortega) is assaulted and hospitalised by a new Ghostdata-face killer 25 years after the initial Woodsboro slaughter portrayed in the initial 1996 film, sam Carpenter returns to the village in Scream (2022). sam had fled Woodsboro after learning that she was the daughter of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), the inaugural Ghostdata-face killer, a discovery that drove her parents to divorce and her to alienate herself from her kin.

Throughout the film, sam is troubled by Billy visions, and Ulrich returns in secret to capture his scenes. While Sam's paternity was kept a secret from the public, her biological mother's identification was never exposed. Bettinelli-Olpin stated to Nerdist, alongside colleagues Radio Silence directors Gillett and chad Villella, that they had already considered the mother's identity. Bettinelli-Olpin confirmed that the mom was in the script but didn't actually make it into the finished version of the movie, despite the fact that she didn't appear in it. The filmmaker indicated that they decided to do this because they thought it could detract from the sisters' narrative.
