Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia Meet Rahul Gandhi Amid Speculation of Political Move
Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia met with congress leader rahul gandhi on Wednesday, sparking speculation that they might join the congress party and be candidates in the upcoming haryana Assembly elections.
The rumors gained traction after congress shared a photograph of gandhi with Phogat and Punia on its official X account. Both wrestlers were prominent figures in the protests against former bjp mp and Wrestling Federation of india chief Brij bhushan Sharan Singh, following allegations of sexual harassment in 2023.
As of tuesday, Congress' central election committee has cleared 66 candidates for the 90-member haryana Assembly. The full list of candidates, including those for the remaining seats, is expected to be released in the next couple of days. Voting for the haryana Assembly is scheduled for october 5, with the results to be announced on october 8.
In response to the speculation about Phogat and Punia potentially running for office, deepak Babaria, AICC in charge of haryana, stated on tuesday that there had been no discussion about their candidacy in the recent meetings. "Neither Vinesh Phogat nor Bajrang Punia are among the candidates finalized so far. We expect to have clarity on this matter in the next couple of days," Babaria said when asked about their potential inclusion among the 32 candidates previously announced.
