South Korea Opening Ceremony Controversy: South Korea was wrongly announced as 'North Korea' by the organizers and that has sparked a big controversy now. Here are the details.

The paris Olympics 2024's Opening Ceremony was already suffering with a controversial build-up, as several threatening factors were jumping in at once to disrupt the ceremony on July 26. One such incident took place during the ceremony, as the announcer addressed south korea as 'North Korea' during the boat ceremony.



This incident occurred when the announcer addressed the boat, which was sailing in the river Seine carrying South Korean athletes, as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, who are the fiercest rivals of the country. The South Korean faithful were pretty upset with the incident and fuel to the fire was added on later as well, when the announcer correctly addressed north korea as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. 


The international Olympic Committee has now officially apologized for the mistake via a press conference.

An error occurred in our broadcast when introducing the team of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the Republic of Korea during the Opening Ceremony, we apologize sincerely," said international Olympic Committee (IOC) media via a post on their official 'X' account.

South Korea’s National Olympic Committee Demands Necessary Actions From ioc President In The Aftermath Of The Controversial Announcement


South Korea’s National Olympic Committee has swiftly acted upon the situation, and their vice minister for sports and culture, Jang Mi-ran, has reportedly requested a meeting with Thomas Bach (IOC President) to make sure that this controversy does not spark again, and that the country should be addressed correctly. 


South Korea is amongst the contenders for featuring in the Top 5 list for the gold medal tallies at the Games and has sent 143 athletes to take part in their designated 21 events.
