Earlier, amit Panghal ensured India's fourth medal from the boxing ring by reaching the semi-finals of the flyweight (48-51kg) event of the Commonwealth Games on Thursday. Last edition's silver medalist at the 2018 gold Coast, Panghal registered a unanimous decision victory against Lennon Mulligan of Scotland. The match was not very challenging but the 26-year-old indian boxer tired his younger Scottish rival with his strong defence.

Panghal collected points midway through a quick counter-attack. In the first two rounds, Panghal encouraged Mulligan to go on the offensive while keeping 'guard down' but nimbly escaped out of his reach. In between, he overtook a 20-year-old rival boxer with a left-handed punch. He hit a 'one-two' punch in the final round to ensure his second Commonwealth Games medal. Earlier, Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Nitu Ganghas (48kg) and Mohammad Husamuddin (57kg) had also confirmed medals in their respective categories by reaching the semi-finals.
