The kerala government has made a decisive move against the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2024, taking its objections to the supreme court and requesting a suspension of these regulations. Asserting that the rules, which are integral to the implementation of the citizenship amendment act (CAA), are discriminatory, arbitrary, and in violation of the principles of secularism, the state government has initiated legal action to challenge their validity.

The caa, passed by parliament in 2019, aims to extend indian citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and afghanistan who entered india before december 31, 2014. However, the kerala government contends that the accompanying rules associated with the caa are unconstitutional, specifically criticizing the classification based on religion and country as discriminatory and contrary to the secular fabric of the nation.

With the filing of petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Rules 2024 and seeking a directive from the central government to halt their implementation until the resolution of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the citizenship amendment act, the supreme court has stepped in to address the matter. The court has scheduled a hearing for march 19, during which it will examine the arguments put forth by the kerala government and other petitioners.

The outcome of this legal battle holds significant implications for the future of citizenship laws in india and the broader discourse on religious and communal rights. The supreme Court's deliberations will play a crucial role in determining the legality and constitutional soundness of the contentious rules, offering clarity on their adherence to India's foundational principles of secularism and equality before the law.
