The primary reason for the nightly hiatus in metro operations is the need for maintenance and repair work. After a day of active service, the metro system requires thorough inspections and repairs during the night hours. Mangu Singh, the former Managing director of delhi Metro, explained in an interview that running the metro service continuously 24/7 is not feasible.
The last metro train usually completes its journey by 11:30 pm, reaching the depot by 12:30 am. Between 12:30 am and 4:30 am, essential maintenance work takes place to ensure the safety and reliability of the system. During this time, comprehensive testing of all trains occurs, along with track repairs and various safety checks. Singh emphasized that this maintenance period is critical for guaranteeing the safety and efficiency of the metro service.
