Complete Shift in Metro Travel Payment System

Chennai: The chennai Metro rail Limited (CMRL) has announced a major change in its ticketing system, moving away from its earlier dedicated metro travel cards towards a unified smart card system.

The existing chennai Metro rail travel card usage is being gradually replaced with the “Singara chennai Card”, aimed at making public transport payments more integrated and convenient.

Introduction of Singara chennai Card

The “Singara chennai Card” was introduced on 14 april 2023 as part of an initiative to streamline travel across multiple modes of transport in the city.

The card is designed to function not only for metro rail travel but also for other public transport systems in chennai, supporting a broader wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW">digital mobility ecosystem.

Key Benefits for Commuters

  • Cashless and contactless travel experience
  • Reduced need for separate metro-specific cards
  • Easier recharge and usage across city transport networks
Step Towards Integrated Urban Mobility

This move is part of Chennai’s larger plan to develop an integrated transport system, where commuters can use one smart card across metro trains, buses, and other public transit services.

Officials believe this will improve convenience, reduce operational complexity, and encourage more people to use public transport.

Conclusion

With the transition to the Singara chennai Card, chennai Metro rail is moving toward a unified and modernized fare system, data-aligning with global smart city transport practices and making daily commuting simpler for passengers.
