How to Keep Your Aadhaar Safe From Scammers

Kokila Chokkanathan
Your Aadhaar is extremely valuable—it contains your biometric and demographic data, which can be misused for financial fraud, SIM card misuse, or identity theft.

Even if scammers try to get it, following these safety practices can protect you.

1. Never Share Your Aadhaar Number Publicly

  • Do not share your Aadhaar number on social media, emails, or unsecured websites.
  • Avoid giving your Aadhaar to unknown calls or SMS requests. Legitimate organizations will not ask for your Aadhaar OTP over call.
Tip: Only provide Aadhaar when legally required, e.g., banking KYC or government services.

2. Use Virtual ID (VID) Instead of Aadhaar Number

  • UIDAI allows generating a Virtual ID—a temporary 16-digit number.
  • You can provide this VID to service providers instead of your actual Aadhaar number.
  • VID changes periodically and cannot be reverse-engineered to get your Aadhaar number.
🔗 Generate VID via uidai portal or mAadhaar app.

3. Enable mobile & Email Updates

  • Link your mobile number and email with Aadhaar.
  • UIDAI sends alerts for any update request, helping you detect fraud attempts.
If you receive an OTP without requesting it, do not share it, and report it immediately.

4. Set Up Aadhaar Lock / biometric Lock

🔒 Aadhaar Lock

  • You can lock your Aadhaar number temporarily.
  • When locked, biometric authentication (fingerprint/iris) cannot be used, even if someone tries.
🔑 Unlock When Needed

  • Unlock only when using Aadhaar for KYC or government services.
Locks and unlocks can be done via the UIDAI website or mAadhaar app.

5. Avoid Sharing OTPs

  • Never share the OTP sent by UIDAI for authentication.
  • Scammers may call pretending to be banks or government officials to get this OTP.
Rule of thumb: No official will ever ask for OTP over call or email.

6. Be Careful with wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW">digital Platforms

  • Use Aadhaar only on secure, verified portals (UIDAI website, government portals, trusted banks).
  • Check for https:// and padlock sign in the URL before entering Aadhaar details.
7. Check for Aadhaar Misuse

  • Use UIDAI’s online Aadhaar services to monitor:
    • Authentication history
    • Lock/unlock status
    • Update requests
Regular monitoring helps detect unauthorized access early.

8. Physical Aadhaar Safety

  • Avoid carrying the physical Aadhaar card unnecessarily.
  • Keep it in a safe place and do not laminate your Aadhaar if asked by unknown sources.
9. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately

  • Call UIDAI toll-free 1947 if you suspect misuse.
  • File complaints with cybercrime authorities if your Aadhaar has been compromised.
