🚆 Indian Railway Holi Special: Extra Coaches in 12 Major Trains Announced

Kokila Chokkanathan
With Holi festival travel around the corner, indian Railways has taken major steps to ease the rush on busy routes by adding extra coaches to 12 popular trains this March. This decision comes as more people will be heading home or to festive destinations, increasing passenger demand on long‑distance services.

📈 Why Extra Coaches?

Hundreds of thousands of people travel by train during holi — especially to and from major cities like delhi, Mumbai, kolkata and regional hubs — which often leads to long waiting lists and limited seat availability. To address congestion and improve chances of confirmed tickets, the railways is strengthening some existing trains with additional coaches this season.

🚅 What This Means for Passengers

Here’s how the extra coaches help travellers:

More seats available: Sleeper & AC coaches added mean larger capacity.
Better chances of confirmed berths: Lower waitlist pressure on busy routes.
Easier travel planning: Especially useful for long‑distance journeys around holi travel dates.

Railway officials say these additional coaches are temporary — meant to run through the high‑demand holi and tourism season in March — and will help clear waiting lists on key routes.

📍 Routes Most Likely Affected

The coach additions are being implemented mainly on trains running between:

  • North india to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata
  • Routes connecting Rajasthan (Ajmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur) to Delhi / Mumbai
  • Other busy services during the festival and marriage season
These trains are getting extra Sleeper, AC and General coaches temporarily to manage passenger loads.
🗓 When Are These Changes Happening?

🚆 The extra coaches are expected to be attached during the month of march 2026, overlapping with the Holi travel rush — which usually peaks from late february through mid‑March.

🧳 Holi Special train Network Running in Parallel

Alongside the extra coaches, indian Railways has also announced a massive holi special train plan, with over 1,200 special train trips operating between 25February and 18March2026 — covering major routes to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, maharashtra and more.

These include regular special services and standalone holi specials that run weekly or daily to help passengers avoid long waits and reach home in time for the festival.

📌 Tips for Passengers This Holi

  • Book early: With demand high, seats can fill fast.
  • Check irctc or NTES: Confirm coach additions and train numbers before booking.
  • Look for holi specials: These often operate alongside regular trains with extra capacity.
  • Plan for peak days: Late Feb–early Mar are busiest on festive routes.
🎉 Bottom line: indian Railways is boosting capacity for holi 2026 by adding extra coaches to 12 major trains and running 1,244+ holi special train trips — making festival travel less stressful and more predictable for millions of passengers.
