Tatkal Ticket Rules Overhauled: OTP Verification Now Mandatory for All Bookings from December 6

Kokila Chokkanathan
In a significant move to curb fraud and automated bookings, the indian Railways has announced a major update to the Tatkal ticket booking system. Starting December 6, OTP-based authentication will be mandatory for all Tatkal bookings across online platforms and apps.

What’s Changing?

Previously, Tatkal tickets could be booked using:

· User login credentials

· Quick payment methods

· Saved card details

This often led to bots and automated scripts booking tickets instantly, leaving genuine passengers at a disadvantage.

With the new rule:

· Every booking will require one-time password (OTP) verification linked to the passenger’s registered mobile number.

· OTP must be entered before completing payment, ensuring that only real, verified users can confirm tickets.

Why This Change Was Introduced

1. Reduce Fraudulent Bookings

· OTP verification prevents bots and third-party scripts from making multiple bookings simultaneously.

· It ensures tickets are booked by actual passengers, reducing ticket hoarding and black-market resale.

2. Enhance Security

· Linking OTPs to verified mobile numbers improves account security.

· Minimizes the risk of unauthorized bookings using stolen login credentials or saved payment details.

3. Improve Passenger Experience

· Genuine passengers will have a fairer chance to book Tatkal tickets.

· Reduces last-minute cancellations and disputes due to fraudulent bookings.

How the OTP Process Works

1. Select Tatkal Ticket
Choose the train, class, and passenger details as usual.

2. Enter Passenger Details
Add name, age, and mobile number linked to the OTP.

3. Payment & OTP Verification
After selecting the payment method, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.

o Enter the OTP within the stipulated time to complete booking.

4. Confirmation
Upon successful verification, the ticket will be booked and a confirmation SMS/email will be sent.

Note: Failure to enter the OTP on time will cancel the transaction, and the ticket will not be booked.

Tips for Smooth Booking Under New Rules

· Keep your registered mobile number active and reachable.

· Avoid using multiple devices to book tickets simultaneously.

· Make payment ready in advance to complete booking within OTP validity.

· Ensure the OTP is entered exactly as received to avoid errors.

Final Takeaway

The indian Railways’ new OTP-based authentication system aims to make Tatkal bookings more secure, transparent, and fair. While it may add an extra step for passengers, the move is expected to reduce fraud, ticket hoarding, and unauthorized bookings, giving genuine travelers a better chance to secure tickets during peak hours.
