Karur Stampede Tragedy — Key Highlights
A tragic stampede occurred on september 27 in Karur, tamil Nadu, during an event linked to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
The incident resulted in the deaths of 41 people and left over 60 injured.
The victims were part of a crowd that had gathered at a public welfare distribution event.
TVK announced an ex gratia payment of ₹20 lakh for each family of the deceased.
Additionally, an amount of ₹2 lakh each was promised to the injured.
A total of 39 families have received the ₹20 lakh compensation directly via RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) into their bank accounts.
The total amount disbursed so far is ₹7.8 crore.
A TVK official confirmed that the relief was expedited despite Vijay’s initial plan to meet the families personally before the distribution.
The official added that all affected families will be supported, including those not yet compensated.
Selvarani, who lost her daughter in the stampede, confirmed receipt of the funds:
"TVK members obtained my bank account details to deposit ₹20 lakh. The amount has been credited to my account today."
Vijay expressed deep sorrow in a letter:
"We are deeply saddened by the unbearable tragedy in Karur and mourn the loss of our family members."
"We once again assure you that we will be there to provide all possible support and solace during this time."
"I will definitely meet the affected families once I get permission from authorities."
"With God's grace, we will overcome this difficult time."
