Prime minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences after a bridge mishap in darjeeling claimed 9 lives.


PM Modi assured that the Centre is committed to providing all possible assistance to the affected.


In his post on X, he stated:


Deeply pained by the loss of lives due to a bridge mishap in Darjeeling. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”

Impact of Heavy Rainfall


North bengal has been affected by continuous heavy rainfall, triggering:


Landslides


Severe waterlogging


Road blockages


Extensive damage to property and loss of lives



Affected districts include darjeeling and Jalpaiguri.



Darjeeling: Casualties and Road Conditions


According to abhishek Roy, Additional SP Kurseong:


7 bodies recovered from debris


2 more people reported missing



A landslide at Dilaram on Kurseong Road blocked access to Darjeeling.


Other affected roads:


Rohini Road is blocked due to a landslide at Gourishankar.


Pankhabari Road is in extremely poorcondition


Tindharia Road remains operational and is being used for evacuation.



Rescue and Evacuation Efforts


Authorities and police are working to evacuate tourists from Mirik via Tindharia Road within 3–4 hours.


National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed to assist in rescue operations.


Movement of vehicles is restricted on the Siliguri-Darjeeling SH-12 road after a portion of the Dudhia iron bridge collapsed.



Jalpaiguri: Waterlogging and Damage


Heavy rainfall caused excessive waterlogging in the Porajhar and Rajganj blocks.


Several houses and farmlands were inundated; residents were forced to evacuate.


The collapse of part of the River Mahananda embankment worsened flooding.
