AAP or BJP... Who has upper hand in MCD Mayor elections?
The Municipal Corporation of delhi (MCD) will hold elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor on 25 April. After many councillors of aam aadmi party (AAP) left the party in the last few months, the number of councillors of bharatiya janata party (BJP) in MCD has increased to 119. Both nominated MPs and MLAs in MCD are eligible to vote in the elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. According to the notice issued by the MCD Secretary's office on Friday, the general meeting of the MCD will be held on 25 april and during this time elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held at 2.00 pm.
Nomination process for MCD elections from 15 April
The nomination process will start on 15 april and will continue till 5 pm on 21 April. Candidates can withdraw their nominations at any time before the elections. The aam aadmi party (AAP) came to power in the 2022 municipal elections by winning 134 out of 250 wards, while the bjp won 104 wards. However, on february 15 this year, three AAP councillors joined the bjp, making it the largest party in the MCD.
Discussion on the names of possible bjp candidates
bjp leaders said that the names of several bjp councillors, including leader of Opposition raja Iqbal Singh, Keshavpuram Regional Committee President yogesh Verma and Shahdara South Regional Committee member sandeep Kapoor, are being discussed as possible candidates for the post of mayor.
What is AAP's plan for MCD elections?aam aadmi party leaders said that the party is preparing its strategy for the mayoral election and will field a suitable candidate. He said that the party will hold a meeting with its councillors to formulate a strategy for the MCD elections.
