President donald trump, in his executive order for a radical change in the US election system, cited the example of india and brazil, saying that both countries are linking voter ID to biometric databases, while the US relies on self-verification for citizenship. The comprehensive executive order signed by donald trump on tuesday (March 25, 2025) states that despite the pioneering system of self-governance, the US has yet failed to implement the basic and necessary election security used by both countries.

According to the order, 'For example, india and brazil are linking voter ID to biometric databases, while the US relies largely on self-verification for citizenship.'

"In counting votes, germany and canada require the use of paper ballots publicly counted by local officials, which substantially reduces the number of disputes compared to the US patchwork of voting methods," it said.

"Furthermore, while countries such as denmark and sweden sensibly restrict mail-in voting to those unable to vote in person and do not count late votes regardless of the date the ballot was mailed, many US elections still have mass mail-in voting, with many officials accepting undated ballots or ballots received well after election day," the order said.

The election commission in india is exploring the possibility of linking voter IDs with Aadhaar, which contains a biometric database, the order said. The election commission on march 18 said technical consultations between its experts and the unique identification authority of india (UIDAI) would begin soon for such an exercise.

The election commission has said that according to Article 326 of the Constitution, the right to vote can be granted only to a citizen of India, but Aadhaar establishes the identity of a person and not citizenship or the right to be enrolled as a voter. The President called for 'free, fair and transparent elections without any fraud, errors or doubt'.
