Are H-1B visa holders in the US in danger?
While the US government led by donald trump has already brought many changes to the green card and citizenship rules and has shown that even green card holders can be deported from the US at any time, the trump government has shown fear to NRIs and other foreigners in the US through 2 incidents that people on H-1B visas will also be forced into this predicament. First incident: The incident of Dr. Rasha Alawi, a kidney transplant surgeon and professor at Brown university Medical school in the US, being unexpectedly deported from the country has raised great fears about the safety of H-1B visa holders.
Dr. Alawieh, a Lebanese national, has been deported despite holding a legal H-1B visa and obtaining a temporary restraining order from the court. Dr. Alawieh, who returned to Boston Logan international Airport after visiting family in his home country, was arrested upon arrival. He was detained for 36 hours and then sent on a flight to Paris. The fact that the US Customs and Border Protection took this action in violation of a court order has sparked great controversy. The US Customs and Border Protection has not yet given any explanation for violating the court order to notify 48 hours before deportation.
In response to these events, legal counsel for Dr. Alawi and his cousin Yara Sehab have initiated legal proceedings against key figures in the trump administration, including Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noam and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Second incident: Ranjani Srinivasan, an indian doctoral student at Columbia university, was forced to leave the united states after her F-1 student visa was revoked. The Department of Homeland Security accused her of supporting Hamas, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the US government. A few days after his visa was officially revoked on march 5, Ranjani Srinivasan was automatically deported from the US on march 11 using a new app called the home app by US Customs and Border Protection.
These two incidents have raised fears of deportation for all parties in the US, including foreign citizens, students, and professionals. Moreover, the trump administration initially targeted those who came to the US illegally. Now, F1 visa and H1B visa holders are also being deported for various reasons.
