The sources confirmed that 'one nation, one election' will be realized within this term. prime minister Narendra Modi had endorsed this idea in his Independence Day speech last month, highlighting that frequent elections hinder the country’s progress.
Modi emphadata-sized that the nation must support the 'one nation, one election' concept and called on political parties to work together for the country's advancement.
As the nda government, led by Modi, marks its first 100 days of its third term, sources indicate that the ruling alliance will remain united throughout the term. Modi also urged parties to ensure national resources benefit the common people and reiterated the commitment to achieving 'one nation, one election'. This promise was a significant part of the BJP's manifesto for the lok sabha elections.
In March, a high-level committee chaired by former President ram nath kovind recommended that simultaneous elections for the lok sabha and state assemblies be implemented as a starting point, with local body elections to follow within 100 days.
The Law Commission is also expected to propose holding simultaneous elections for all three levels of government—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies—beginning in 2029, along with provisions for a unity government in cases of a hung house or no-confidence motion.
The Kovind panel suggested 18 constitutional amendments to facilitate this, most of which won’t need state assembly ratification but will require parliamentary approval. The panel has not set a timeline for the implementation of simultaneous polls.
