Congress not accused of appeasement without reason…

The issue of Muslim appeasement is once again in discussion amid the lok sabha elections 2024. There is a series of allegations and counter-allegations from the ruling and opposition sides. In this article, we will try to understand what was the role of the Nehru-Gandhi family in Muslim appeasement and how the Muslim society, especially the indigenous Pasmanda Muslims, was affected by it.

Nehru period

India's first prime minister Nehru ji is known for nation building. But he remained almost inactive on the question of social reform, social justice etc. in the Muslim society. His government did not consider it appropriate to take any step towards reform in Muslim personal laws. It is not that his attention was not drawn towards this. Abdul Qayyum Ansari, a strong soldier of the first Pasmanda movement and freedom fighter, had also written several letters to Nehru on this subject, jb Kripalani had said at the time of the Hindu marriage Act that the Nehru government should also make arrangements for single marriage for Muslims.

He also said that the Muslim society is ready for this and if there is any shortcoming somewhere, it can be considered. Perhaps he was referring to the social movement of Asim Bihari. It is worth mentioning that by that time Asim Bihari had made the Pasmanda Muslim society aware to a great extent by running special campaigns for adult education, women education and social justice in the Muslim society. In this context, Dr. rajendra prasad had said that why is there talk of reform only among Hindus? Are Muslims not citizens of this country? Are there no deprived people and women among them? Is there no need for reform in their society?

Dr. Shyama prasad Mukherjee had said that the Nehru government does not have the courage to bring about social reform towards the discrimination prevalent in the Muslim society. On the contrary, the congress Ashraf leaders of that time and the fanatic Ashraf Maulanas of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind strongly opposed the reservation for reform and social justice in the Muslim society, saying that the Muslim society runs on Sharia law and there is no discrimination in Islam. Prominent among them were Maulana Azad, Zakir Hussain, Rafi ahmed Kidwai, Syed Mahmood, Tajamul Hussain, Maulana Hifzur Rahman, former Muslim Leaguer Begum Qudsia Ejaz Rasool etc.
