Former JNU scholar Umar Khalid, facing charges of conspiracy in the delhi riots case, did not get relief. On tuesday (May 28), a delhi court rejected Khalid's bail plea. Additional Sessions Judge sameer Bajpai in Karkardooma court rejected Khalid's plea. Umar Khalid had approached the trial court after withdrawing his bail plea before the supreme court on february 14, 2024, citing change in circumstances.

The supreme court bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Pankaj Mithal was scheduled to hear the matter on february 14 when Khalid's lawyer, senior advocate kapil sibal, informed the court that the bail plea was being withdrawn. According to the Bar and Bench report, senior advocate kapil sibal had said, "Due to the change in circumstances, we want to retreat and approach the trial court for relief." But now Additional Sessions Judge sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma court has given a big blow by rejecting Umar Khalid's bail plea.

When was Umar Khalid arrested?

Let us tell you that Umar Khalid was arrested in september 2020 and was charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly as well as several other offenses under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He has been in jail since then. The lower court first refused to grant bail to Khalid in march 2022. After this, Umar Khalid approached the High court, which also refused to grant him relief in october 2022, after which an appeal had to be filed before the supreme Court. In May 2023, the supreme court had sought a reply from the delhi Police in this matter. His petition before the supreme court was adjourned 14 times.
