Indian heart for Pakistani girl: Surgery done in Chennai!

Heart surgery on a Pakistani girl in chennai shows humanity beyond data-borders.Ayesha Rashan, a 19-year-old girl from Pakistan, who was suffering from heart disease and had been waiting for a heart transplant for the past 5 years, underwent a heart transplant on january 31. Doctors at MGM Healthcare in chennai successfully transplanted the heart of a 69-year-old brain-dead patient who was flown in from a hospital in Delhi."Now I can breathe easily." Ayesha Rashan says happily. She said that she plans to complete her schooling in Karachi and wants to become a fashion designer. Ayesha first came to india in 2019 after suffering a heart attack and heart failure. Dr. KR Balakrishnan, a senior cardiac surgeon from Malar Hospital, Adyar, chennai, recommended him for a heart transplant. Subsequently, Ayesha's name was added to the waiting list in the State Organ Registry. Meanwhile, doctors surgically implanted a left ventricular assist device, a device that helps the left ventricle pump blood. Subsequently, Ayesha's right heart failed last year when she went to Pakistan.“It was very scary to see my daughter suffering like that. We approached the surgeon. We told him that it would be difficult for us to arrange the money for it. But he asked us to come to him in India.” Ayesha's mother Sanobar Rashan said.

Dr Balakrishnan's team had told Ayesha's parents in september last year that a heart transplant was the only option. But, Ayesha's parents are in distress. At that time last january, Ayesha's parents received a call that the heart had been found.“Foreigners are allotted hearts only when there is no recipient in the whole country. Many surgeons hesitated because the brain-dead man was in his 60s. But we decided to take the risk because the donor's heart was good and this was Ayesha's only chance.” Dr. KG Suresh, Associate Director, Institute of heart and lung Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support, MGM Hospital said.Ayesha's surgery was a success and after a few days she was removed from life support, doctors said. Ayesha's medical expenses have been met from funds raised by NGO aishwarya Trust, former patients, and doctors. He was discharged from the hospital on 17th April. It is worth noting that the doctors have said that heart transplant surgery costs up to Rs 35 lakh.
