What conflict-torn Manipur displayed during R-Day parade?

In their Republic Day tableau on Friday, Manipur, which has been experiencing ethnic strife since May of last year, included a distinctive women-only market centred in Imphal. The tableau also has a woman gathering lotus stems from Loktak Lake in the state, which is one of the biggest lakes of its kind in the northeastern part of the nation.

Market Ima Keithel

The only market in the world maintained only by female traders is called "Ima Keithel," which translates to "Mother's Market" in the local language. It is situated in the heart of the state capital, Imphal. Having been founded some 500 years ago, it is home to 5000–6000 female vendors offering a wide range of goods, and it forbids male vendors from entering. The Manipur government has the authority to penalize men who have stores here. The tableau creators were reported by NDTV as saying, "The market is an important example of nari shakti (women power), where women's central role in socio-economic activities drives economic development." It is shown as a building at the end of the construction on the tableau.

India’s initial manufacturer of lotus silk

Bijiyashanti Tongbram of Thanga village is also portrayed on the tableau; according to the tableau's creators, she recently became the nation's first lotus silk manufacturer.

"She not only creates jobs for a large number of women in the area, but she also exports lotus silk to other nations, making india the fourth country in the world to do so... bringing immense pride to the nation," they continued.
