What is the purpose of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project?

The aim of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project is to construct high-rise structures and various kinds of redevelopment while demolishing the biggest slum region in Asia. This is not a brand-new project; it was initiated in 2004 20 years ago. The goal of this initiative is to move the 68,000 Dharavi families to a new location. Every family will receive a 405-square-foot carpeted dwelling as part of the concept.

In 1999, the maharashtra government, comprising of the bjp and Shiv Sena, originally suggested the construction of Dharavi. With the intention of transforming mumbai from a slum into a city, the late Vilasrao Deshmukh's congress government established the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority in 2004 under the auspices of the Slum Redevelopment Authority (SRA).

There were many global tenders released in the following years: 2007, 2009, 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2022. However, for some reason, this endeavour continued hitting roadblocks. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project was ultimately awarded to a prominent national manufacturer who placed the highest offer of Rs 5069 crore in 2022. Ever since the project has encountered opposition from every opposition party in Maharashtra.

The history of Dharavi

Originally an island in the eighteenth century, Dharavi is now a part of mumbai metropolis. Although fishing was practiced here back then, things changed over time. Fishing has ended here because the water turned into a swamp. Following this, people settled in this area and constructed a village. There weren't many people around back then.

When numerous factories and impoverished people were being relocated from the city during the british rule, the majority of people migrated to Dharavi since living expenses were lower and food and drink were more affordable there. Since then, the population has been growing, and the region has progressively become a slum. Dharavi quickly rose to prominence as Asia's biggest slum district.
