A maratha community body in Nashik on wednesday decided not to celebrate diwali and other upcoming

festivals until they get reservation under the Extremely Backward Class (OBC) category in Maharashtra.

Nashik district unit of Sakal maratha Samaj (SMS) passed a resolution at a meeting held in Nashik city to

celebrate diwali as Black Diwali. According to the resolution passed in the meeting, “Members of the

Maratha community will not buy anything for Diwali. They will not light the lamps.”

This decision was taken in the meeting

SMS also decided that at least two people in every village of Nashik district would go on indefinite hunger

strike and others would sit on gradual hunger strike. An SMS official said that during the meeting it was

also decided to ban the entry of political leaders including MLAs, MPs and ministers in Nashik district.

What happened in the all-party meeting?

An all-party meeting was organized yesterday by the government regarding maratha reservation. Leaders

of all major parties attended the meeting. In this meeting, leaders of all parties agreed to give permanent

reservation to the maratha community and all expressed concern over the attacks and stone pelting on the

houses of MLAs. chief minister Eknath Shinde, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, ncp chief

Sharad Pawar and other prominent leaders attended the meeting.

What did cm Shinde say?

CM Eknath Shinde had said, law and order problem has arisen in the state. All the leaders expressed deep

displeasure over the unfortunate incidents taking place. The peaceful movement of the maratha community

got spoiled due to the occurrence of such incidents. Expressing his opinion, he said that Maratha


community also needs to be patient, whatever possible will be done to provide reservation. Leaders of all

parties have also appealed to Jarange to end the fast.
