Cash, jewellery seizures get close, personal in poll-bound Telangana

Residents of the city said that the police were persecuting regular people in violation of the model code of behavior, which mandates that unaccounted money and pricey items be taken in order to guarantee free, fair, and clean elections. The police have persisted in confiscating money and valuables in spite of many complaints to high-ranking police officers and the election Commission. The locals remarked that it seems the police are going above and beyond what is required under the code of conduct.

The Kondapur merchant, whose gold was seized inside the bank, informed Deccan Chronicle, "We had bought the jewels a long time ago. Where can we currently obtain the documents? Furthermore, I was taken aback when they stopped me inside the bank and made me sign a receipt claiming that the seizure had been done somewhere else. I'm not sure what sort of policing this is."

One of the residents, a lady, stated they had been putting tiny amounts of gold aside for an impending wedding. "The gold was taken as we were bringing it to the jeweler to place an order. How can we obtain the records now that we have been preserving them for years?" she inquired.

This is also the narrative of several liquor stores, traders, and small business owners, mostly in the unorganized sector.  "They are seizing money during check-ins at commercial zones, wine stores, banks, and registration offices. They are taking money even in situations when there is a possibility that the documents would be supplied in an hour or so," an Ameerpet dealer stated.

The proprietor of an Ameerpet jewellery store claimed that although the police boast of finding tonnes of cash and jewels, none of them belonged to any politician. "They leave aside big fishes and show their power to common people like us," he stated. Top police officials have spoken virtually little about the seizures and how they are affecting their daily work.
