Telangana Hyderabad - 141-yr-old Islamia High School tottering on brink of collapse

SIBY JEYYA
The secunderabad institution noted for its colonial architecture, Islamia High school, is in the news for the incorrect reasons. The 141-year-old historic building is at risk of collapse because it has developed many fissures. If regular maintenance is not carried out by the Archaeological department and the State government, it might crash at any time.

While the pupils at the school are dealing with a number of challenges, some heritage activists and students have expressed their worries, wondering why the education department is so unconcerned about giving the facility a data-facelift. The building has lost some of its structural integrity. The school is largely unsuited for kids to attend courses.

Architectural description of the historical structure

The Islamia High school building features an impressive entrance with a beautifully elliptical arch, a molded scroll, and the inscription "Islamia High School" and "1882" on it. The marble plaque demonstrates that the british resident of the time approved the construction of the school in the british Army Cantonment. The arch is vanishing and gradually going dark. A few pupils who requested anonymity said, "The institution offers lessons in English, Urdu, and telugu for males in grades VI through X. There are about 125 students enrolled in total.

The deteriorated facility, together with a lack of qualified teaching personnel, is a serious problem. We have often voiced our complaints about the structure's poor state to the relevant authority. The structure has some deterioration, including crowded classrooms, cracked walls, and certain areas that have been destroyed. Any event may happen at any time, yet nothing was heard.

The history building at Islamia High school was recently visited by historian Mohammed Haseeb Ahmed, who was shocked to see it in such bad shape. Stone pieces have been sliding off the building because of fissures caused by inadequate maintenance and delayed restoration. At any moment a severe accident may happen. Given that it is one of Secunderabad's key buildings, why is the State government ignoring it? It's potentially fatal for students. Why is this edifice being neglected when other historic buildings in the city are undergoing renovations?

About the School

The school, built in 1882 and standing as a representation of colonial architecture, is located across from Monda Market. During the time when educational reforms were taking place in the princely State of Hyderabad, notably Madarse Aliya (Gunfoundry), the school was founded by Mir Turab ali Khan (named Salar Jung 1), who served as the PM under Mir Mahboob ali Khan (Nizam VI). The names of notable contributors who provided the money for the building's construction are listed on a marble plaque that is attached to the entryway. Among the benefactors are Seth ram Gopal, Babu Khan, and Alladin. The plaque shows that the british resident at the time gave his or her consent for the building of the school in the british Army Cantonment.
