Cauvery water problem: D.K.Sivakumar..!?
Similarly, the karnataka government is trying to build a dam across the river Cauvery in an area called Meketatu. tamil Nadu is strongly opposed to this. Also, no dam can be constructed at Meketatu without the approval of the Cauvery Management Board. There is also an order of the supreme Court. However, karnataka is adamant that they will finish building the dam at Meketatu. Even recently, during the budget session of the karnataka Legislative Assembly, the state government announced that it would take urgent steps to get necessary approvals for the construction of a dam at Meketatu.
Meanwhile, for the past few days, the issue between tamil Nadu and karnataka state regarding Cauvery river water has increased. 40.4 TMC from karnataka to tamil Nadu from june 1 to July 31, 2023. While the water was supposed to arrive, only 11.6 TMC of water has arrived. Also, karnataka has not provided Cauvery water to tamil Nadu in august as per the order of the Cauvery Management Authority. Due to this, all the crops grown in the Cauvery Delta area are drying up, even though the government is demanding to open the water, the karnataka government is refusing to listen to it. In the case filed by the tamil Nadu government in the supreme court, the supreme court has set up a three-judge bench to investigate the matter. Subsequently, the state government released 10,000 cubic feet of water from the Cauvery river. Meanwhile, in the Cauvery River Water Management Commission meeting held, tamil Nadu side requested to release water at the rate of 24 thousand cubic feet per second for 10 days. However, the commission ordered to release 7200 cubic feet of water. But the karnataka government refused to accept this and argued that only 3000 cubic feet of water can be released per day. Subsequently, the Cauvery River Water Management Authority ordered to release 5000 cubic feet of water for 15 days till september 12.
Karnataka deputy chief minister and Water Resources minister DK Sivakumar, who met the media, said, "We met all the legal experts today and talked to them. Currently, the entire team is on its way to meet our Senior Advocate representing Karnataka. An order has been issued to release 5,000 cubic feet of water. But lack of water is a big pain for Karnataka. No rain. I hope they will respect the sentiments of karnataka and the farmers. We also respect the farmers of tamil Nadu. However, karnataka is faring worse. The only solution for this is Megedhat. That is also our request. Meketatu is not just for Karnataka; It will also help tamil Nadu.” He said.
