Telangana Hyderabad have Poor Knowledge of Adult Vaccines

A survey conducted in hyderabad of individuals over 50 revealed a serious lack of information regarding the effectiveness of several adult immunisations that might lower morbidity and death among them. According to a research conducted in hyderabad by the Association of Physicians of india (API), just 4% of persons over 50 had gotten adult vaccinations.
Only 53% of adults over 50, according to the API survey, were aware of how well adult immunisations work to prevent serious disease. Intriguingly, the survey found that just 12% of healthcare professionals in hyderabad had vaccinated their parents or in-laws, showing that carers too had little understanding of adult immunisations.

Compared to other cities, hyderabad has less doctor-patient conversations on adult vaccinations. According to Dr. Bipin Kumar Sethi, a senior endocrinologist from hyderabad and member of API, "while the need and concept of immunisation in children is firmly entrenched and practised, adults often do not have any vaccine aside from the customary TT (Tetanus Toxoid) shot after injuries, vaccine for hepatitis B, anti-rabies vaccine, and vaccines for/before travel."

Adult immunisations were acknowledged during Covid, according to Dr. Sethi, Head of Endocrinology at Care Hospitals, but the acceptability has to expand for the prevention of many other illnesses. Adults need to be aware that there are vaccinations available to prevent shingles, Hepatitis B, pneumonia, and the flu. There are several more vaccinations that protect people in general as well as specific patient groups with lowered immunity, such as diabetics, from the morbidity and even mortality linked to these illnesses. The expense of these vaccinations should be weighed against the protection they provide because their efficacy and safety have been well demonstrated, Dr. Sethi said.

Only 8% of adults (those over 50) and 12% of carers have asked their doctors about adult vaccinations, and only 7% of elderly patients have received such recommendations. hyderabad has much lower levels of adult vaccination awareness than other cities in terms of preventing serious disease. According to the survey, 73% of adults and 74% of their carers in hyderabad were unaware that such vaccinations were only available for adults.
