Rs 86 crore, Rs 70 crore, Rs 69 crore. Well, these amounts are not the costs of some infrastructure or industrial projects. Each of these figures reflects sales at three different wine shops in telangana in the last 20 months.

Around 45 liquor stores reported sales of more than Rs 40 crore and more in and around hyderabad alone, including portions of Ranga Reddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and sangareddy districts that are regarded to be part of Greater hyderabad, while 13 recorded sales of Rs 50 crore or more during the time. Four stores had sales of more than Rs 60 crore, while one store recorded sales of at least Rs 70 crore.

However, the bragging rights for selling the most liquor by a single shop — according to the excise department data — goes to a wine shop in kukatpally with an apparent ‘license to thrill’ its customers with a designated ‘MED007" number by the department, which is credited with pushing across its counters Rs 86 crore worth of liquor in the 20-month period between december 2021 and July 2023.

The excise agency estimates that 2,620 wine stores sold alcohol for a total of Rs 54,419 crore over this 20-month period. Ranga Reddy, which is part of Greater hyderabad, took the top spot among "excise" districts for alcohol sales with total sales of Rs 3,708 crore. Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rs 3,539 crore, hyderabad, Rs 2,606 crore, and sangareddy, Rs 2,292 crore, followed.

The recent allocation of liquor licenses from december 1, 2023, to november 3, 2025, saw 1.08 lakh applications for the 2,620 stores, with the state government collecting a non-refundable cost of Rs 2 lakh with each application. This was due to the state's rising booze sales in every district.
