Student Suicides Rampant in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh - Schools to IIT

SIBY JEYYA
The narrative of student suicides in educational institutions in telangana and andhra pradesh spans residential schools, colleges, professional colleges, universities, and institutions like the IITs. While peer pressure and study stress are the primary causes of a significant number of suicides, other factors including depression, marital problems, and occasionally even ragging are also motivating students to take their own lives.

On august 7, a postgraduate student at the indian Institute of Technology, hyderabad (IIT-H), age 21, was discovered hanged in her residence hall room. Mamitha Nayak, a first-year graduate student, just enrolled in the master's course in civil engineering at the Kandi campus in the sangareddy district, roughly 60 kilometers from Hyderabad.

In a suicide note that was discovered in her room, she claimed that no one was to blame for her passing and that she was experiencing extreme mental stress. She was the fourth IIT-H student to commit suicide in the past 12 months and the second in less than a month. D. karthik (age 21), who was depressed over his backlogs, committed himself by drowning in the water in Visakhapatnam.

He left the university on July 17 while a second-year B. Tech (Mechanical) student. On July 25, authorities found his dead on a beach in Visakhapatnam. The youngster, who came from Miryalguda in Telangana's nalgonda district, was furious about not being able to make up missed exams.

In one academic year, four IIT-H students committed suicide. Megha Kapur, a 22-year-old Rajasthani woman, committed herself by jumping from a hotel in sangareddy town, which is close to the IIT hyderabad campus, in september of last year. The B. Tech student was residing in a lodge and was behind in certain classes. G. Rahul, a second-year M. Tech student, and native of Nandyal in the kurnool region of andhra pradesh, hanged himself in his dorm room in august of last year as a result of placement and thesis pressure.

In his suicide note, he stated that the institute shouldn't require students to finish their theses. "If he is worn out, he will conduct more research on suicide, and his research will finally be successful. Due to this, I tried drinking and smoking to relieve the stress, but I was unable to," he wrote in the note that authorities found on his laptop.

On behalf of the Institute of Perception Studies, Hakku Initiative, a platform that works on solutions with individuals and governments, compiled data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and found that, from 2014 to 2021, over 3,600 students perished by suicide in telangana alone.

Relationship problems, academic stress, fierce competition, and high parental expectations, according to K. Rebecca Maria, Counselling psychologist, 1Life, a suicide prevention helpline, are the main causes of suicides. In other circumstances, bullying in academic institutions also encourages pupils to act in a drastic manner.

"Parents have high expectations, which increases the pressure. Children expect 90% when they receive a grade of 70%. Then there are problems with relationships, like one-sided love and love triangles. They believe the relationship is over if it ends, the psychologist explained. "Some individuals freely discuss feeling suicidal. While there is another group of folks who don't speak, they ask for assistance. They simply go and kill themselves, she claimed. Maria thinks that if the appropriate person is accessible and willing to listen, any situation can be resolved.

Many times, even though kids don't feel suicidal, they are depressed. The person would start having suicidal thoughts in the third year, she warned, if this issue is not handled in the first or second year. Maria underlined the need of creating an environment in which students who are currently feeling hopeless and alone begin to feel upbeat and confident.

Some college students believe they have no pals. Numerous bad thoughts surdata-face when you're alone. We recommend that individuals engage in social activities and keep themselves busy so that they feel optimistic, she added, adding that mental exercises like yoga, meditation, and pursuing personal interests can help people establish positive behaviours.
