When prime minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day today, congress leader mallikarjun Kharge abstained from participating in the event. He also highlighted the contributions of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and congress Prime Ministers like Indira gandhi, lal bahadur shastri, Rajiv gandhi, PV narasimha Rao and manmohan Singh. He also mentioned BJP's Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Speaking in the video, he criticized prime minister Modi saying, "Every prime minister has contributed to the progress of the nation. Today some people are trying to say that india has progressed only in the last few years."


And "All Prime Ministers with atal bihari vajpayee have thought about the nation and taken many steps for development. But today I am saddened to say that democracy, constitution and self-government are under serious threat. New tools are being used to choke the throat. Apart from opposition parties, CBI, Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax raids, The election commission is also getting weaker. Opposition MPs are being silenced, suspended, microphones are muted and speeches are suppressed..." he said. Gharke listed and praised the creation of indian Institutes of Technology, indian Institutes of Management, AIIMS, Space Research. Nehru also promoted art, culture and literature in independent India. He also said that the policies of lal bahadur shastri and Indira gandhi helped make india atma nirbar (self-reliant).
