Why is rohini Commission important?

The rohini Commission was constituted under Article 340 of the Constitution. The importance of this commission can be gauged from the fact that so far only two commissions have been formed under this article. One of which is named Mandal Commission. Based on the Mandal Commission report, 52 percent of the country's population is given reservation in central government jobs and 27 percent in higher education. Under this article, the first backward classes Commission i.e. Kaka Kalelkar Commission was formed. This commission was formed before the Mandal commission.

Now talking about rohini Commission, the logic behind making it was that a large section of the country belongs to OBCs, in which there are thousands of castes. These thousands of castes are at different places in the order of social development. Some of these castes are also in a better position to make use of the provisions of reservation. While there are some castes who remain deprived of the benefits of reservation even after being needy.

Why is the rohini Commission report important?

Political experts say that the central government had started this exercise to woo the 'most backward' people of the society. Now the report submitted by the rohini Commission to the President can be politically important because before the upcoming lok sabha elections, all the parties from bjp to india are trying to win over the voters belonging to other backward classes. OBCs constitute more than 40 percent of the electorate in india and no party can afford to leave the largest voting block before the elections.
