Telangana Hyderabad - Storing genetic material for posterity
Cryo-preserving live cell lines, gametes, and embryos of not just endangered species but also of any conceivable animal in india is done by the sole genetic resource bank in the nation. The facility is special because CCMB-LaCONES has created distinct techniques for collecting and cryo-preserving oocytes and semen from wild animals and government-run zoological parks.
The scientists at CCMB-LaCONES employ liquid nitrogen that has been chilled to minus 195 degrees Celsius for cryogenic preservation. Senior scientists from LaCONES claimed that the ground-breaking facility will serve as a ready-reckoner and a source of reference for future generations in addition to preserving animal genetic material for posterity.
They said that with the rapid advancement of biotechnology, a facility like this would be invaluable for future cutting-edge genetic research. The CCMB LaCONES is working with several indian Zoo facilities to make the preservation laboratory a success so that the genetic resources of the animals may be gathered for preservation.
