22 districts in Telangana report deficient rainfall - Tributaries of Krishna, Godavari run dry

SIBY JEYYA
Not even a trickle has been added to the bulk of the big and minor irrigation projects in both the krishna and Godavari basins so far in the current water year, despite 22 out of 33 districts in the State reporting deficit rainfall. Nearly all of the 53 main and small tributaries that drain the two major river basins, with the exception of Pranahita, have dried up.

Additionally, the prospects for this year's Kharif (Vanakalam) have been clouded by the lack of rainfall. Up to 22 of the 33 districts in the state recorded rainfall deficits between june 1 and July 12. The worst affected districts as a result of the deficiency include nizamabad (-38.4%), khammam (-50.7%), jagtial (-42.7%), and warangal (-39.2).

The future of Vanakalam crops is questionable because inflows into Jurala, srisailam, Nizam Sagar, and as low as 4,185 cusecs into nagarjuna sagar and 4981 cusecs into SRSP are all nil. The nagarjuna sagar left canal's 6.6 lakh acres of ayacut in Suryapet, Nalgonda, and khammam are most affected by this.

Hope is attributed to the inflows that have recently begun to reach krishna basin's Almatti dam. Farmers can expect for late transplanting if there is good rainfall, at least by the first week of August. Both the srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects have live storage that is 33.72 TMC and 147 TMC, respectively. These were 44 TMC and 165 TMC at the same time period the year before, respectively. The crops that are nourished by rain are also likely to be impacted if there is a dry spell in the second half of July.

Compared to the season's average of 1,24,28,723 acres, the state has so far seeded 42,76,263 acres. According to the officials, sowings have already covered around 35% of the season's average. Cotton was grown on a total area of 31,88,200 acres, which is 63% of the average for the season. Less than 6% of the region was covered with paddy up until this point. Approximately 3 lakh acres of the typical area of 49,86,634 acres have been planted with crops thus far. Farmers are building seed beds in numerous locations in preparation for the discharge of water from the reservoirs.

• Deficient rainfall recorded in 22 districts, normal in 11
• zero to poor inflows into Jurala, srisailam and nagarjuna Sagar
• 52 major, minor tributaries of krishna and Godavari dry
• Irrigation schedule awaited in 6.6 lakh acre ayacut of NSP
• Area covered under paddy is less than 6 percent of normal
