Once power-starved, Telangana now self-sufficient
Telangana is the only State in the union offering farmers unlimited free electricity. For the period of 2014–15 to 2021–22, the State government has allocated Rs 36,890 crore as a subsidy for farmers to receive free power. The government invested approximately Rs 39,321 crore on the State's transmission and distribution network during the past nine years, which led to a rise in power output and a strengthening of the distribution network. At a cost of Rs 22,502 crore, the distribution system was improved through the building of substations, the installation of power transformers, distribution transformers, and the construction of additional lines.
The State's highest-ever recorded peak electricity consumption was 15,497 MW on march 30. The greatest demand in earlier times in unified andhra pradesh was 13,162 MW. Similar to this, Telangana's per-capita electricity consumption, a measure of a State's progress, grew from 1,196 units in 2014 to 2,166 units annually. Since 2015, the State government has been giving 6,01,749 sc and 3,26,335 st customers free electricity up to 101 units per month at a total cost of Rs 696 crore. In addition, the government is offering free electricity up to 250 units to 60,669 dhobi ghats and laundry establishments as well as 30,552 Nayee Brahmin hair salons.
The State government has given the distribution firms a subsidy totaling Rs 11,500 crore for the fiscal years 2022–2023 in order to provide free electricity to 27.20 lakh agricultural users and discounted electricity to home consumers. With a contractual capacity of 5,741 MW and a total renewable capacity of 6,151 MW, telangana is leading the nation in the production of solar energy. Ten years ago, the state had only 74 MW.
