BBC Controversy : PM Indira Gandhi?...

Raids continue at BBC offices in India. On Tuesday, the team of the Income Tax Department reached several offices including Delhi. The IT department has said that this is a 'survey'. Now in the country and abroad it has been called an attack on the media. The congress and the governing bharatiya janata party (BJP) disagree on this. The congress is alleging that the bjp is retaliating after the BBC documentary. At the same time, bjp is reminding him that even indira gandhi had banned BBC once.

Recently, the central government banned the telecast of BBC's documentary on the gujarat riots. The central government, using its emergency powers, directed YouTube to remove the documentary. The central government said that in this, selected things have been shown against prime minister Narendra Modi. Since then, the BBC and the Modi government are at loggerheads.

When indira gandhi took action?

The matter is of the year 1970s. indira gandhi became the prime minister for the first time in 1966 and by 1970 she had become very powerful. At that time there was a documentary called 'Calcutta'. Shot in and around calcutta from 1968 to 1969, this documentary portrayed calcutta impressionistically. It was made by French director Louis Male.

After this, many such documentary films were made which showed India's poverty more. BBC used to make all these documentary films and used to broadcast them. indira gandhi was not happy with this. The indian Embassy also received complaints that the documentary was biased towards India. The indian Embassy asked the BBC to stop telecasting this documentary. However, the BBC did not do this.

BBC office was closed

According to a research paper, on 29 august 1979, Indira Gandhi's government expelled BBC from india and banned it. Famous journalist Mark Tully was the representative of BBC in india at that time. Mark Tully and correspondent Rooney Robson were given 15 days to close the BBC office.
